The miserable mile in SW Florida is from intracoastal marker 101 just past Shell Point to just past picnic island due west. It's a common mistake to believe the miserable mile is the slow zone into the river past little Shell Island. The miserable mile was named long before the entrance into the river was ever a slow zone.  I guess because all of you "Hot Rods" have to slow down at Shell Point, that makes you miserable.  The original miserable mile was named because the cross currents are terrific for sail boaters with such a narrow channel to maneuver.  Cruising from green marker "1" to red "10", If you're outside the markers even a foot, you stand a good chance of running aground.
